A pink opal can be close to half clay. Studies of Peruvian pink opal found a fibrous clay mineral, palygorskite, making up a quarter to nearly half of the stone's weight, woven through the opal like felt. That clay is part of what gives pink opal its soft, milky body, so different from the clear flash of the opals in most jewelry.
In crystal work, the pink opal meaning is gentle love and calm, kindness toward others and toward yourself. It also has a few look-alikes, and two simple clues, light and flaws, set the real stone apart from glass and rose quartz.

Tender, calm and kind
Pink opal has the soft glow of a seashell's inner lip, and its meaning is all tenderness.
Gentle love. It's a stone for warmth and affection that doesn't overwhelm, the quiet kind of love found in small gestures.
Calm. Pink opal is loved as a quiet stone, a soft place for the mind to rest after a long day.
Kindness to yourself. Its pink is a reminder to treat yourself the way you'd treat a friend, with patience instead of criticism.
The word opal is usually traced back to the Sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone. Unlike the famous fiery opals of Australia, though, pink opal has no flashing rainbow colors. Gem dealers call this kind "common opal," but there's nothing common about its color. Most of it comes from the Andes of Peru, from mines in the Acarí area south of Lima.
Heart chakra, three water signs and Venus
Pink opal belongs to the heart chakra, fitting its rosy color and loving meaning. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the three water signs, matching its element. Libra comes in through Venus, its ruling planet and the planet of love, and through October, opal's birthstone month.
Comfort, care and quiet evenings
- On a nightstand for a soft, calming end to the day
- On a bookshelf in a quiet reading corner
- Beside a mirror as a reminder of self-kindness
- As a gift for a new mother, a friend in a hard season or an October birthday
- In meditation, resting over the heart
- On a desk on stressful days, as a pause point for a deep breath
Three kind words. Each morning for a week, hold your pink opal and say three kind words about yourself out loud, words you'd say to a friend. Set the stone where you'll see it later as a reminder to keep that tone all day.
Real pink opal, pink glass or rose quartz?
Pink opal shares shelf space with two common look-alikes: pink "opalite," which is man-made glass, and rose quartz.
| Pink opal | Pink opalite | Rose quartz | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Natural common opal | Man-made glass | Natural quartz |
| Look | Milky and opaque, often with darker veins or specks | Very even, glassy, may glow bluish | Translucent, often with a soft cloudiness |
| Bubbles | None | Sometimes tiny round bubbles | None |
Clue one: light. Hold a flashlight behind it. Rose quartz glows through, while pink opal stays milky. Clue two: flaws. Pink opal shows veins, specks or tiny black fern-like marks. Glass is perfectly even and may hold round bubbles.
A pink opal tower from our shop
Our pink opal tower is the six-sided point in the photo, milky pink from base to tip. Owls, mermaids, leopards and roses have come through the shop in this stone too, though the tower is the piece in stock now.
For a pink to wear, the rose quartz elephant necklace pairs pink opal's closest heart-chakra partner with the elephant, a long-standing sign of luck and family. A rose quartz flame beside the tower gives a shelf more of that soft color.
Rose quartz, rhodonite and moonstone
For self-love, set it beside rose quartz, the classic heart stone covered in our rose quartz guide. For forgiveness with a steadier edge, add rhodonite. For calm nights, pair it with moonstone and its pale shimmer.
More pinks and greens for the heart wait in our heart chakra crystals.
Caring for a stone that holds water
Pink opal is about 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and more delicate than quartz. Like all opal, it holds a little water, so sudden heat and very dry spots, such as radiators and hot cars, are best avoided. Clean it with a barely damp microfiber cloth, never a soak, and keep it far from harsh cleaners and ultrasonic baths. To cleanse it, lay it on a folded silk scarf by a north-facing window for an afternoon, or simply hold it to your heart for a minute. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Pink opal FAQ
Is pink opal natural?
Yes, real pink opal is a natural stone, mostly from Peru. Pink "opalite" is a different thing: man-made glass.
Is pink opal rare?
It isn't rare, but it comes mainly from one region in the Peruvian Andes.
Is pink opal the October birthstone?
Opal is October's birthstone, and pink opal is one of its gentler forms, though most birthstone jewelry uses opal with play of color.
Is pink opal UV reactive?
Some do. Opal often glows under UV, and pink opal varies piece to piece.
Can you wear pink opal every day?
With some care, yes. It suits pendants and earrings best. In rings and bracelets it can scratch or chip with daily knocks.
Opal made of gel and clay
Opal is silica, the same compound as quartz, but it never grew visible crystals. Instead, silica-rich water filled cracks and cavities in volcanic rock and slowly set into a gel, which hardened while holding onto some of its water. In precious opal, tiny silica spheres line up neatly and split light into rainbow flashes. In pink opal they don't, so the stone shows only its body color. Its pink sits in the fibrous palygorskite clay woven through the opal. One study traced the color to organic pigments, related to the carotene in carrots, held by that clay. Another, on opals from the Acarí area, pointed to manganese. The recipe is still being worked out.
