Rose Quartz Meaning, Properties & Uses

Almost every piece of rose quartz you'll ever hold grew as a solid pink mass, not a crystal. Pointed rose quartz crystals are so rare that collectors prize the few Brazilian finds. The stone the rest of us know is cloudy and soft-looking, the pink of a first blush.

The rose quartz meaning is love in all its forms. It's the stone people reach for when they want to feel warmer toward the people around them and gentler with themselves. Further down you'll find a ten-second way to tell real rose quartz from the pink glass sold under its name.

Love, and not only the romantic kind

Rose quartz is the best-known love stone there is, but the love it stands for is wide.

Romance. It's the classic stone for couples and for anyone hoping to welcome a new relationship in. Many people keep a piece by the bed or give one as an anniversary gift.

Friendship and family. People search "rose quartz meaning friendship" for a reason. A rose quartz bracelet or necklace is one of the most common gifts between friends, sisters and mothers and daughters, a small way to say "I'm glad you're mine."

Self-love. This is the meaning many people come to rose quartz for. It's kept close as a reminder to speak to yourself the way you'd speak to someone you love, especially on the days that make that hard. It's also the stone people hold when they're ready to forgive, someone else or themselves.

A favorite story ties the stone to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Racing to save Adonis, she caught herself on a briar. In the version crystal lovers tell, her blood stained white quartz pink, and that is why rose quartz is so often given to someone mending a broken heart.

The heart chakra stone

Spiritually, rose quartz belongs to the heart chakra at the center of the chest, the energy center traditions link with love, compassion and forgiveness. It's the stone most often laid over the heart in meditation, and one reason so many rose quartz pieces are pendants that rest right there.

Its signs come from its planet: rose quartz is ruled by Venus, and Venus rules both Taurus and Libra.

Wearing, carrying and keeping rose quartz

Wear it close to the heart. A pendant sits right over the heart chakra, which makes necklaces the most popular way to wear this stone. The rose quartz elephant necklace pairs it with the elephant, a symbol of good luck, strength and family. The crescent moon rose quartz necklace adds a small oval moonstone, and the crescent moon stands for new beginnings. The rose quartz tree of life necklace brings in growth and family roots. For the wrist, the rose quartz heart tassel bracelet makes an easy gift for a friend.

Carry it. A raw rose quartz keychain clips onto your keys, so it's in your hand every time you reach for them. Rough rose quartz has a frosted, glassy feel that's nice to hold in a stressful moment.

Keep it where you rest. A rose quartz heart palm stone on the nightstand is a soft last thing to see at night. Feng shui's love corner sits at the far right of a room, seen from the door, and a pair of rose quartz hearts there is a classic choice.

Try this after a day when you've been hard on yourself. Lie down and rest your rose quartz over your heart. Breathe slowly for ten breaths, feeling its weight on your chest. Then say one kind thing to yourself out loud, the thing you'd say to a friend, and leave the stone where you'll see it in the morning.

Real or pink glass? The ten-second check

Rose quartz is affordable, so outright fakes are less common than with rarer stones, but pink glass and dyed quartz still turn up. Here's how to tell them apart.

Look for Real rose quartz Pink glass Dyed quartz
Clarity Cloudy or milky, sometimes with fine cracks Often perfectly clear Clear or white base
Color Soft and slightly uneven Bright and perfectly even Strongest inside cracks
Inside Wispy veils, no bubbles Tiny round bubbles or swirls Dye lines along fractures
Touch it to your lip Stays cool Warms within seconds Stays cool

"Cherry quartz" is a trade name for glass, not a kind of quartz. If a piece looks like candy, it probably is.

Types of rose quartz

  • Raw rose quartz: rough chunks straight from the deposit, the form used in our keychains.
  • Tumbled and carved: polished into hearts, palm stones, flames and figures, which brings out its glow.
  • Star rose quartz: a polished piece that shows a six-rayed star when a single light shines through it.
  • Lavender rose quartz: a trade name for pieces with a violet tint.

Rose quartz and amethyst, and other good pairs

Amethyst is the pairing people ask about most, and yes, they go together beautifully. Rose quartz is said to open the heart while amethyst brings a quiet mind, a natural evening pair. Our rose quartz and amethyst necklace puts the two side by side.

Green aventurine shares the heart chakra and adds a hopeful, lucky note, which is the idea behind our green aventurine and rose quartz heart bracelet. Moonstone, the stone of new beginnings, sits on our crescent moon necklaces for anyone starting over in love.

You can browse every piece for this energy center in our heart chakra crystals.

Keeping the pink

Rose quartz is a 7 on the Mohs scale, tough enough to wear every day. Drop it on a stone floor, though, and the edges can chip. Water won't hurt it: a rinse and a soft cloth are all it needs, and cords, elastic and metal findings just shouldn't sit in a long soak.

Ordinary rose quartz holds its color well. The rare crystal kind can pale in strong sun, so a shelf out of direct light is the safest home for any piece you want to keep at its pinkest.

As a heart stone, rose quartz is often cleansed after an emotional week, a hard conversation or a breakup. Set it on a selenite plate overnight, wave it through a little sage smoke, or leave it under the full moon. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.

Rose quartz FAQ

Which wrist do you wear a rose quartz bracelet on?
Most people choose the left, the hand said to receive, so love can come in.

Can rose quartz get wet?
Yes. Rose quartz is water safe, so a rinse or a shower won't hurt the stone. Pat cords and findings dry after.

Can rose quartz be in the sun?
For an afternoon, yes. Ordinary rose quartz holds its color well, but the rare crystal kind can fade, so a spot out of direct sun is best for long-term display.

Is rose quartz rare?
Ordinary rose quartz is common and affordable. Clear, crystallized rose quartz and star rose quartz are rare.

Is rose quartz a birthstone?
It isn't on the official birthstone lists, though some crystal guides suggest it as an alternative for October.

What does it mean when a rose quartz bracelet breaks?
Usually that the elastic wore out. A popular belief says a bracelet that breaks has done its job, so many people restring it or choose a new one.

Is rose quartz good for the bedroom?
It's one of the most-loved bedroom stones, kept on the nightstand as a symbol of love and calm.

The mystery of the pink, solved in 2001

Rose quartz is quartz, silicon dioxide, the same mineral as clear quartz and amethyst. For decades, mineralogists argued about where its pink came from. In 2001, researchers at Caltech dissolved the quartz away and found the answer left behind: microscopic pink fibers of a mineral related to dumortierite, far thinner than a human hair, threaded all through the stone. They found the same fibers in rose quartz from 29 places around the world.

Those fibers are why rose quartz is cloudy instead of clear. The rare pointed crystals don't carry them. They get their pink another way, which is also why they can fade in sunlight while ordinary rose quartz holds its color. When the fibers in ordinary rose quartz happen to line up, a polished piece turns light into a six-rayed star, which is star rose quartz.

Most rose quartz comes from Brazil and Madagascar. In the United States, the Black Hills of South Dakota are known for it, and rose quartz is South Dakota's state mineral.
