Amazonite Meaning, Properties & Uses

| Updated

For more than three thousand years people have worn amazonite, and not one ancient or medieval writer described it. Egyptians were mining it in the Bronze Age and setting it in jewelry, yet the stone stayed nameless in the written record until modern mineralogists caught up with it. Even the name they chose is a puzzle: it points to a river where no one has ever shown it was found.

The amazonite meaning is courage, truth and calm: a sea-green stone for speaking up without losing your footing. It also raises a question scientists still haven't settled: why a mineral that is usually white or pink turns sea green.

Brave, honest and even-tempered

Amazonite's color sits between the green of a lagoon and the blue of shallow surf, and its meaning balances a strong voice with a steady heart.

Courage. Its name comes, by way of the river, from the Amazon warriors of Greek legend, and courage became part of its meaning. It's kept for moments that ask you to stand your ground, and some call it a stone of hope for the same reason.

Truth. As a throat stone, amazonite is tied to honest speech, especially the kind that's hard to say. It's chosen for setting things straight without starting a fight.

Calm. Its heart chakra side keeps that honesty kind. Amazonite is linked to an even temper, the level head that lets the truth land gently.

Three thousand years of a green stone

Long before it had its river name, amazonite was a prized ornament. Egyptians of the Bronze Age dug it from the desert at a site called Gebel Migif, and it turned up in jewelry across Egypt and Mesopotamia. Yet for all those centuries of use, no ancient or medieval writer described it. It was first described as a mineral of its own in the 1700s, and in early modern times most of it came from near Miass, in Russia.

The name came later still. Europeans believed green stones from the Amazon basin were this stone, and the name stuck, but no one has ever shown that those stones were amazonite or found it along the river. The river itself was named for the Amazons of Greek legend, so the stone carries the warriors' name twice removed.

Where feeling meets speech: heart, throat, Virgo, Aquarius

Amazonite works at two chakras, the heart and the throat, so its meaning joins feeling to speech. Its signs are Virgo and Aquarius. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, which suits a stone of clear, honest words. Aquarius is an air sign ruled by Uranus, the planet of originality and independence, a match for a stone that encourages speaking in your own voice.

Speaking up, settling down

  • Before a difficult conversation or a talk with your boss
  • On a desk for steady confidence through a demanding week
  • In the hand during meditation, for a calm, open heart
  • In a bag on days that call for courage
  • As a gift for a friend starting something brave
  • Near a phone or laptop, as a reminder to say what you mean kindly

Say it in one breath. When there's something you need to say, hold your amazonite and practice it aloud in a single sentence, short enough to say in one breath. If it doesn't fit, trim it until it does.

Amazonite pieces from our shop

Most of our amazonite has been towers and points, and right now one tower is in stock.

Place it. Our amazonite tower is a polished sea-green point for a desk or shelf.

Wear its partner. The green aventurine tree of life necklace carries a matching green to wear, with aventurine's luck and the tree of life for roots and growth.

Keep a soft companion. A handmade rose quartz owl brings rose quartz's warmth to the heart side of amazonite, with the owl for quiet wisdom.

Green aventurine, rose quartz and turquoise

Green aventurine shares amazonite's green and its heart chakra, adding a stroke of luck to its courage (see the green aventurine guide). Rose quartz softens amazonite's honesty with compassion, the pair to keep for tender conversations (more in the rose quartz guide). Turquoise, another blue-green throat stone, makes a matching pair for anyone who wants both colors close.

Our heart chakra crystals collection holds more green stones for the heart.

Looking after amazonite

Amazonite is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, sturdy enough for jewelry, but it has perfect cleavage, meaning it can split cleanly along flat planes if it's knocked hard. Set it down gently and store it away from harder stones. Rinse it in lukewarm water, dry it well and skip soaking, salt and harsh cleaners. To cleanse it, set it beside a lit candle for a few quiet minutes, or leave it on a windowsill overnight. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.

Amazonite FAQ

Is amazonite toxic?
It's safe to hold, wear and keep. It does contain traces of lead, and a 2021 lab test found lead leaching from a sample above the EU toy-safety limit, so keep it out of drinking water and away from small children who put things in their mouths.

Is amazonite a feldspar?
Yes. It's a blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar.

Is amazonite valuable?
Most amazonite is affordable. Deep, even blue-green crystals, especially with sharp faces, are the collector pieces.

How can you tell if amazonite is real?
Look for fine white streaks running in one direction and a soft sheen on flat faces. Color that pools in cracks can be a sign of dye.

Is amazonite rare?
No. It's widely available around the world.

Can amazonite get wet?
Yes, briefly. Rinse it and dry it, but don't soak it.

Is amazonite radioactive?
Only faintly. It contains a little naturally radioactive potassium-40, the same as ordinary granite.

The color nobody could explain

For a long time, mineralogists couldn't say why amazonite is green. Microcline, its parent mineral, is usually white, cream or pink. A 1985 study linked the blue-green to traces of lead combined with water in the crystal, and later research pointed to rubidium, thallium and iron as part of the story. The question still isn't fully closed.

The white stripes running through most amazonite have a simpler explanation. As the crystal cooled, a second feldspar, albite, separated out into thin streaks, the way cream separates from milk. That's why most amazonite shows fine white lines running in one direction, like the piece in the photo.
