For decades the only clue to ocean jasper's home was a photograph in a mineral book, captioned "source unknown." The stone had been written about in the 1920s and then lost. In the late 1990s, searchers worked their way along Madagascar's northern coast by boat, asking in village after village, until they found it near Marovato in shallow water that showed only at low tide.
The ocean jasper meaning comes down to calm and joy, with orbs that read like ripples on a quiet tide. Its story also has a twist: the original seam ran out within a few years, which is why older pieces are so prized.

Tides, circles and an easy heart
Ocean jasper's orbs look like bubbles rising through seawater, and its meaning follows the rhythm of the tide.
Calm. It's a stone for moving with change instead of fighting it, the way the sea rises and falls without strain.
Joy. Ocean jasper is linked to light-heartedness and simple happiness, the mood of a long afternoon by the water.
Circles. Its round patterns are read as cycles: what you give comes back around, and endings turn into beginnings.
Where the tide meets the heart
Ocean jasper belongs mainly to the heart chakra, for compassion and joy, and reaches up to the throat, for speaking kindly, and down to the solar plexus, for steady confidence. Its sign is Capricorn, an earth sign, which matches the stone's earth element and its slow, patient energy. Its other element is water, for the sea it was found beside.
Shorelines of the everyday
- On a desk as a reminder to take things one wave at a time
- In a bathroom or by a window with a view of water, real or painted
- In a pocket on days full of small changes
- As a gift for someone who loves the beach or misses the coast
- Beside a gratitude journal, for its joyful side
- In meditation, tracing the orbs with a fingertip
Count the orbs. When your mind is racing, pick up your ocean jasper and slowly trace one orb at a time with your fingertip, breathing in on one circle and out on the next. Stop at ten.
The seam that ran out
That low-tide deposit at Marovato didn't last. After years of digging, the original seam was largely worked out, and dealers report that the old Marovato material, with its crisp orbs and bright colors, became harder to find and rose in price. Newer ocean jasper comes from other deposits in Madagascar, including a mine further inland called Kabamby, and every vein has its own palette, from soft greens and pinks to deep teal. That's why two pieces of ocean jasper can look like they came from different oceans.
Ocean colors from our shop
Ocean jasper isn't in the shop right now. These pieces share its greens and its heart-centered calm.
Place a sea-green tower. Our amazonite tower shares ocean jasper's blue-green color and its heart and throat chakras (amazonite guide).
Wear a garden green. The moss agate crystal statement ring brings a leafy, patterned green to the hand, with branching shapes that echo ocean jasper's orbs, as the moss agate guide explains.
Keep a heart-chakra owl. A handmade green aventurine owl adds green aventurine's luck to ocean jasper's joy (see the green aventurine guide).
Our heart chakra crystals collection holds more stones for an open heart.
Keeping the orbs bright
Ocean jasper is about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, sturdy for everyday handling, but it can have small natural pits and pockets of tiny crystals that catch dirt and chip if knocked. Those little crystal pockets are the part to look after: brush out dust with a soft toothbrush under running water, then let the piece dry fully before it goes back on the shelf. Keep it off hard counters and away from stones that could scratch its polish. To cleanse it, rest it beside a bowl of water for an evening, or hold it while listening to the sound of waves. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Ocean jasper FAQ
Is ocean jasper from the ocean?
In a way, yes. The original Marovato seam lay in shallow water on Madagascar's coast and could be worked only at low tide, and its sea-colored orbs completed the name.
Is ocean jasper the same as orbicular jasper?
Ocean jasper is a kind of orbicular jasper, the name for any jasper patterned with orbs. Ocean jasper is the Madagascar coastal material, also sold as sea jasper.
Is ocean jasper rare?
It's found only in Madagascar, and the original Marovato seam is largely worked out, so fine old pieces are scarce. Newer material from other deposits keeps it widely available.
Is ocean jasper an agate?
Partly. The orbs are made of chalcedony, the same quartz as agate, set in a silica-rich volcanic rock, so it's often described as both.
Is ocean jasper water safe?
Yes. A rinse is fine. Dry it well, especially any small crystal pockets.
Can you wear ocean jasper on your wrist?
Yes. A strand of its orbs on the wrist makes an easy touchstone for taking a busy day one wave at a time.
How the orbs formed
Ocean jasper began as a rhyolite flow, a silica-rich volcanic rock, and was later completely silicified, turned to silica through and through. Its orbs, called spherulites, are round clusters a few millimeters across, now made of chalcedony, with iron oxides giving their rings color. Exactly how they formed is still debated. Small cavities that never filled hold sparkling drusy quartz.
