The black bead on a lava bracelet is the same rock as most of the ocean floor. Basalt covers more of the earth's surface than any other rock, and lava beads are basalt that cooled with its gas bubbles still trapped inside, which is why they feel so light.
The lava stone meaning is strength and grounding: a stone born of fire and cooled into earth, worn to stay steady and find the courage to begin again. The how-to below covers the wax coating that stops many lava beads from taking oil, and the one place oil should never go.

Fire turned to earth
Lava stone began as molten rock and ended as something light, rough and solid. Its meaning follows that journey.
Grounding. As a stone of the earth's own interior, it's a classic root stone, worn to feel rooted and calm.
Strength. Lava is linked to courage and to the ability to bounce back after a hard time.
Rebirth. Volcanoes destroy and create at once, building new land as they go, so lava stone stands for beginning again after upheaval.
People have treasured lava for a long time. In the 1800s, travelers on the Grand Tour of Europe brought home cameos carved from the lava of Mount Vesuvius, a souvenir of the volcano that buried Pompeii.
Root chakra, Taurus and Cancer
Lava stone belongs to the root chakra at the base of the spine, the energy center of safety and stability. Taurus, the earth sign, matches its grounding weight in the hand, and Cancer, the sign of home, appears beside it on some lists. Fire and earth are its elements, the two states it has lived in.
What lava beads are worn for
- A daily grounding bracelet, simple and light on the wrist
- A wearable diffuser for a favorite essential oil
- A reminder of strength after a rough year
- A seven chakra piece, lava beside a bead for each chakra color
- A love bracelet, paired with rose quartz hearts
Chakra and heart bracelets
Wear the chakras. Our lava stone 7 chakra crystal bracelet pairs black lava beads with seven chakra-colored beads, a band about an inch wide that closes with a silver flower button clasp.
Wear it with love. The stretchy lava stone and rose quartz heart bracelet sets rose quartz hearts among lava beads, grounding and tenderness together, a fitting gift for someone beginning again in love.
How to scent a lava bead bracelet
Scent it in a minute. If your beads feel smooth and shiny, they may be waxed, which keeps oil out. Soak them in hot water for five minutes and wipe them dry first. Then let one drop fall from the bottle onto two or three lava beads, on the side away from your skin, and give it a minute to soak in. Keep oil off the other stones, metal and elastic, which some oils can weaken.
Many people choose lavender at night, citrus in the morning and peppermint at a desk. A scent usually lasts from a few hours to a day. To switch, let the old one fade completely before adding a new one.
Lava stone with rose quartz, obsidian and the chakra colors
Rose quartz softens lava's strength with tenderness, the pairing on our heart bracelet, and our rose quartz guide covers it. Obsidian is lava's glassy sibling, born of thicker, silica-rich lava that cooled into glass (obsidian guide). The seven chakra colors join lava on our chakra bracelet, one for each energy center.

Caring for lava beads
Lava stone is porous, light and a little rough, so it takes in water, oils and lotions easily. Keep it away from long soaks, wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth, and let it air dry fully if it does get wet. Take bracelets off before showering or swimming, mostly to protect the elastic and any other stones.
A night in the moonlight is an easy way to refresh it, and a pass through sage smoke works too. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Lava stone FAQ
Which hand do you wear a lava stone bracelet on?
Most wear grounding stones on the left, and a scented bracelet works best on the wrist you lift toward your face most.
Is lava stone porous?
Yes. Its many tiny holes are why it soaks up and holds essential oil so well, once any wax is off.
Are blue or white lava beads dyed?
Yes. Natural lava is black to gray or reddish brown, so bright colors are dyed.
Is lava stone basalt?
Most lava beads are made from basalt or similar volcanic rock, often the bubble-filled form called scoria.
Is lava stone a crystal?
Not exactly. It's a volcanic rock, made of tiny mineral grains and glass, but it's worn alongside crystals.
How can you tell if lava beads are real?
Real lava is light for its size, with open pores and a matte, gritty feel. Resin copies tend to be smooth and evenly patterned.
Bubbles frozen in stone
Lava stone is solidified lava, most often basalt, the dark rock that makes up the ocean floors and volcanic islands like Iceland. Deep underground, molten rock holds dissolved gases under great pressure, much like a sealed bottle of soda. When it erupts, the pressure drops, the gases form bubbles, and if the lava cools before they can escape, the rock sets with the bubbles trapped inside. Basalt so full of holes it looks like a sponge is called scoria.
Obsidian forms from a different kind of lava, thick and rich in silica, that cools before crystals can form. Basalt lava is runnier, darker and full of iron and magnesium, which is why lava beads are so dark.
