Pliny the Elder, writing in the first century, explained why sardonyx was such a favorite for seals in Rome. Carved into a seal and pressed into hot wax, it was, he said, almost the only gemstone that didn't pull the wax away with it. Citing an older writer, Pliny credits Scipio Africanus, the general who defeated Hannibal, as the first Roman to wear it, and the emperor Claudius wore it after him.
The sardonyx meaning is courage and eloquence: a banded stone for standing firm and speaking well. It's often mixed up with carnelian and onyx, and counting the colors in its stripes settles it in seconds.

Courage, a clear voice and steady bonds
Courage. Roman soldiers are said to have carried sardonyx carved with Mars, the god of war, for bravery in battle. The stone still carries that reputation for nerve and steadiness.
Eloquence. In Renaissance Europe, sardonyx was worn by speakers who wanted to choose their words well. It's kept today for interviews, speeches and conversations that need a steady voice.
Steady bonds. Its layers, laid down one on another, link it to lasting partnerships and loyal friendships, the kind built slowly and meant to hold.
Bands of red and white
The name joins two words. Sard is the old name for reddish-brown chalcedony, taken from Sardis, an ancient city in what is now Turkey, and onyx comes from the Greek for "fingernail," since a pale pink-and-white band can look like one. Pliny wrote that the name first meant "a stone with a layer of carnelian resting on a layer of white," the kind that came from India. Engravers loved those layers: cut through the white into the red, and a carved face stands out in light against a dark ground. That's how many of the great cameos of history were made.
Root, sacral and the sign of Leo
Sardonyx is placed at the root chakra, for strength and stability, and the sacral chakra, for its warm red-brown. Its sign is Leo. Leo's tie is the calendar: as one of August's birthstones, sardonyx falls in Leo's season, late July through most of August. Its elements are earth, for its grounding, and fire, which it shares with Leo.
Speeches, partnerships and long efforts
- Before a speech, a presentation or a hard conversation
- As a gift for an August birthday
- Between partners, as a token of a bond meant to last
- On a desk through a long stretch that needs steady effort
- In a pocket on days that call for courage
- In meditation, held at the base of the spine for a grounded feeling
A week of small proofs. Write down one quality you want to build, like patience or confidence. Each evening for a week, hold your sardonyx and name one small moment when you practiced it. The stone grew in layers, and so does a habit.
Sardonyx, carnelian or onyx? Count the colors
All three are forms of chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz, and the names overlap enough to confuse anyone.
| Sardonyx | Carnelian | Onyx | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color | Red-brown bands with white or black | Solid orange to red | Black and white bands |
| Bands | Straight, parallel layers | Usually none | Straight, parallel layers |
| Classic use | Cameos and seals | Beads and signets | Cameos and black beads |
Straight bands with red-brown in them mean sardonyx. Solid orange-red with no bands is carnelian. Black and white bands without red are onyx.
Warm reds to wear while sardonyx is away
Our sardonyx has come as palm stones sold as fancy sardonyx, and once as a sphere. These pieces share its colors.
Wear a warm red. Our carnelian tree of life earrings carry carnelian, the solid orange-red chalcedony closest to sardonyx's red layers, with the tree of life for steady growth. The two share the sacral chakra (carnelian guide).
Add a root red. The red jasper tree of life earrings match sardonyx at the root chakra, with red jasper's steady strength (see the red jasper guide).
Celebrate August. A peridot bracelet features sardonyx's fellow August birthstone, bright green against its red-brown, a birthday pair the peridot guide explores.
Our root chakra crystals collection holds more stones of strength.
Looking after sardonyx
At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, sardonyx is hard and tough, a sound choice for rings and pendants. It can still scratch against harder stones and quartz, so store it on its own. Rinse it in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft brush. A few modern dyes can fade, so keep cleaners mild and skip long days in strong sun. To cleanse it, hold it in the smoke of a candle you've just put out, or set it among your houseplants overnight. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Sardonyx FAQ
Is sardonyx agate?
Partly. Both are banded chalcedony, but agate's bands curve while sardonyx's run straight and include red-brown sard.
Can sardonyx get wet?
Yes. A rinse and a soft cloth are fine, though jewelry on cord shouldn't soak.
Is sardonyx the same as carnelian?
No. Carnelian is solid orange-red chalcedony. Sardonyx has bands of red-brown with white or black.
Is sardonyx dyed?
Sometimes. Coloring banded chalcedony is a very old practice, described even by Pliny, and many deep, even reds on the market today are dyed or heat-treated.
What does sardonyx mean in the Bible?
In the Book of Revelation, sardonyx is the fifth of the twelve foundation stones of the New Jerusalem.
Is sardonyx rare?
No. Sardonyx is widely available and affordable. Finely banded, crisp pieces suitable for carving are the prized ones.
Why chalcedony grows in layers
Sardonyx is chalcedony, quartz made of crystals far too small to see. It forms when water carrying dissolved silica seeps into cavities and cracks in rock and leaves a thin film behind, over and over. Traces of iron oxide color some films red-brown while others stay white or turn dark. When the layers settle flat, one on another, the bands come out straight, which is what separates sardonyx and onyx from the curving rings of agate, and makes it so good for carving.
