One spell in the Egyptian Book of the Dead opens with the words "You have your blood, Isis." Spell 156 was to be said over a knot-shaped amulet of red jasper, the tyet, placed at the neck of the dead so the power of Isis would protect the body. The stone's red stood for the goddess's blood.
The red jasper meaning is strength and steady grounding: a calm, earthy red for staying power, protection and keeping your feet under you on hard days. A one-minute ritual for the end of a hard day comes later, along with the quick look that tells real red jasper from dyed beads.

Strength that stays put
Red jasper is the plain-spoken stone of the set: matte, heavy for its size and the color of fired clay, and its meaning matches.
Strength. Its old nickname is the stone of endurance, for the long haul rather than the quick sprint.
Grounding. As a root chakra stone, it's linked to feeling rooted, safe and steady.
Protection. Egyptians trusted it for the tyet, and it's still worn as a protection stone today.
Root chakra, Aries and Scorpio
Red jasper's place is the root chakra, the base of the chakra column, where its brick red is the chakra's own color, and many guides add the sacral chakra above it. Its signs are Aries and Scorpio, both traditionally ruled by Mars, the red planet. You'll find more stones for them in our Aries crystals and Scorpio crystals. Its element is fire.
Long weeks and steady roots
- During a long, demanding stretch at work or school
- As a grounding stone after a stressful day
- In a chakra set, as the root stone
- As a quiet protection charm for home or travel
- On days you need stamina more than excitement
Earrings and a chakra moon
Wear it. Our platinum plated red jasper tree of life earrings hang 2 inches long and set red jasper in a tree of life, its roots a fitting match for a root chakra stone.
Hang it up. Red jasper chips stand for the root chakra on our 7 chakra crystal moon décor, beside orange aventurine, citrine, turquoise howlite, amethyst and clear quartz.
Place it. A piece by the front door or on a desk where long tasks happen suits its steady, stay-with-it energy.
Root down at night. Stand barefoot, red jasper in one fist at your side. Press your heels into the floor for three breaths, then open your hand and set the stone on the floor by your shoes for the morning.
Real or dyed? Look for the veins
Natural red jasper is opaque and slightly uneven in color, often with darker veins, specks or faint banding where other minerals mixed in. Perfectly uniform, glossy red beads, all identical, may be dyed stone or glass. Dye also tends to gather in cracks, leaving the color stronger along them.
Red jasper with carnelian, smoky quartz and obsidian
Carnelian is its glowing, translucent cousin, sharing red-orange warmth and courage (carnelian guide). Smoky quartz doubles the grounding, a steady pair for stressful weeks, as our smoky quartz guide explains. Obsidian adds protection to red jasper's strength, and our obsidian guide covers it.
Red jasper's fellow root stones are gathered in our root chakra crystals.
Caring for red jasper
Red jasper is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and wears well every day. Clean it with lukewarm, soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it, keeping earring hooks dry. Its color comes from iron minerals, so sunlight won't fade it. Many people refresh it by setting it on bare soil or a houseplant pot overnight, a natural fit for an earth-red stone. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Red jasper FAQ
Is red jasper a quartz?
Yes. Jasper is an opaque, microcrystalline form of quartz, colored and clouded by other minerals.
What's the difference between red jasper and carnelian?
Both are microcrystalline quartz, but carnelian lets light glow through it, while red jasper is fully opaque, with a matte, earthy red.
Is red jasper a birthstone?
Not a traditional one, though modern zodiac lists give it to Aries.
Can you wear red jasper every day?
Yes. It's hard and durable, and its color won't fade.
Is red jasper water safe?
Yes. A rinse won't hurt it. Just dry it well.
Which wrist do you wear red jasper on?
Many choose the left, to take in its steadiness, though earrings and décor work anywhere.
Why jasper is opaque
Jasper is quartz in microscopic grains, so crowded with other minerals that light can't pass through. In red jasper the extra ingredient is iron oxide, the same chemistry as rust, which gives it the color of red earth. It forms where silica-rich water seeps through clay, ash or sediment, and patterns form as the silica hardens.
The name comes from the Greek iaspis, a word used for several hard, colored stones in the ancient world.
