People have been carrying obsidian away from Glass Buttes, in central Oregon, for at least 9,000 years, and arrowheads made from it turn up from British Columbia to California. The hills are public land today, and the Bureau of Land Management sets the obsidian area aside so anyone can collect a reasonable amount by hand, free. Mahogany obsidian, the red-and-black glass that looks like polished wood, is one of the finds.
For crystal lovers, the mahogany obsidian meaning is grounding and gentle strength, the warm, softer side of a famously intense stone. It also comes with a few simple collecting rules worth knowing before you go, and a clear way to tell it from black obsidian at a glance.

The softer obsidian
Black obsidian has a reputation as a powerful, no-nonsense stone. Mahogany obsidian keeps its strength but adds warmth.
Grounding. It's a stone for feeling solid and settled, the way warm wood feels steady under your hand.
Gentle strength. Mahogany obsidian is known for courage that doesn't need to be loud, the steady kind that keeps going.
Protection, softened. Like black obsidian, it's carried as a shield, but its red makes that protection feel warmer and less severe. Its red-brown also links it to the sacral chakra, for creativity and pleasure in everyday life.
Our obsidian guide covers black obsidian and its other forms in depth.
Low and warm: root, sacral, Libra and Capricorn
Its place is low in the body's chakra line: the root chakra for steadiness, and the sacral chakra, just below the navel, for its red-brown. Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and harmony, which fits the stone's gentler side. Capricorn is an earth sign, matching the stone's element, earth.
Steady hands and warm rooms
- Tucked in a coat pocket for long, demanding days
- On a desk through long stretches of hard work
- In a living room or den, where its wood-like look fits right in
- In meditation, held low for a grounded, settled feeling
- During a creative block, for its sacral warmth
- As a gift for someone rebuilding after a hard year, warm rather than stern
Warm the glass. Obsidian starts cool in the hand. Hold your piece in both palms until it's warm, and name one thing you'll keep showing up for this week.
Digging your own at Glass Buttes
The rockhound area at Glass Buttes covers roughly 36 square miles of BLM land in the high desert east of Bend. Collecting is by hand tools only and for personal use, and no permit is needed for a reasonable amount. A few older mining claims near the center belong to their claimants, so those spots are off limits. Rules can change, so check with the BLM's Prineville District before you go.

Both are the same volcanic glass, so they share most traits.

Black, red and steady: pieces from our shop
Mahogany obsidian has come through our shop as polished points. These pieces share its root chakra warmth.
Wear the black form. Our obsidian crystal elephant necklace carries mahogany obsidian's darker partner, with the elephant for steady strength and family.
Keep a heart of obsidian. A handmade obsidian crystal heart brings the same volcanic glass to a shelf.
Add a warm red. The red jasper tree of life earrings echo mahogany obsidian's red and its root chakra steadiness, with the tree of life for growth and more in the red jasper guide.
Smoky quartz is the third grounding partner, and the smoky quartz guide explains why. Browse more steadying stones among our root chakra crystals.
Treat it like glass
Mahogany obsidian is natural glass, 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and its edges can be very sharp on raw pieces. Polished points are safe to handle but can chip if dropped. Keep it apart from quartz and harder stones that could scratch its shine. Water is fine: rinse it, then dry it with a soft cloth to keep the polish bright. Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can crack glass. To cleanse it, set it on bare earth in a garden pot for an hour, or hold it while you breathe slowly. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Mahogany obsidian FAQ
Is mahogany obsidian man made?
No. It's natural volcanic glass, mined mainly in Oregon and Mexico. Glassy red stones such as red jasper or carnelian are sometimes mislabeled "red obsidian."
Is mahogany obsidian a crystal?
No. It's natural glass with no crystal structure, used alongside crystals.
Is mahogany obsidian rare?
No. It's common in volcanic regions like Mexico and Oregon and usually inexpensive.
Is mahogany obsidian water safe?
Yes. It's glass, so water won't harm it. Just avoid sudden heat changes.
Is mahogany obsidian the same as black obsidian?
It's the same volcanic glass, colored red-brown by iron oxide where black obsidian isn't.
Can you wear mahogany obsidian on your wrist?
Yes. A mahogany obsidian bracelet keeps its grounding close all day. Like all glass, its beads can chip against hard surfaces.
Where the red comes from
Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools so fast that its atoms have no time to arrange into crystals, leaving a natural glass. In mahogany obsidian, part of the iron in the melt formed tiny grains of iron oxide, the reddish-brown mineral hematite, scattered through the glass. Where those grains gathered, the glass turned red-brown. Where they didn't, it stayed black. The swirls you see are the flow of the lava itself, frozen in place as it cooled.
