A lump of calcite may once have helped steer an Elizabethan warship. It lay beside the navigation dividers on a ship that sank off Alderney in 1592, and in 2013 scientists showed that a crystal like it can find the sun through cloud or after sunset by the way it splits light. Their work gave new life to an old idea that Viking sailors steered by a "sunstone."
The calcite meaning is clarity and renewal: a soft, glowing stone known for cleansing stale energy and amplifying the energy around it. It's also the crystal behind that sailor's trick, and the last section explains how it finds a hidden sun.

Clearing, brightening, starting over
Calcite has a soft, waxy glow, like light coming through honey, and its meaning is about clearing a path.
Clarity. Calcite is known as a cleansing stone, used to sweep out stale energy from a room or a mood. It's chosen for the moment after a mess, when the space is cleared and the mind can think again.
Amplifying. Calcite is said to turn up the energy around it, which is why it's kept on study desks and beside other crystals. It's chosen for picking up a stalled plan or a hard subject and carrying it forward.
Renewal. Calcite is linked to fresh starts: new routines, new rooms and new ways of seeing an old problem.
One stone, many colors
Calcite grows in a wider range of shapes and shades than most minerals, and in crystal work each color carries its own focus.
| Color | Chakra | Turned to for |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow and honey | Solar plexus | Confidence, willpower and optimism |
| Orange | Sacral | Creativity, play and warmth |
| Blue | Throat | Calm communication and rest |
| Green | Heart | Fresh starts and emotional ease |
| Pink (mangano) | Heart | Gentleness and self-kindness |
| Clear (optical) | Crown | Clarity and a clear view ahead |
Our shop's calcite has come in honey yellow and orange.
Water signs and fire signs
Calcite settles out of seas, lakes and dripping cave water to build limestone, chalk and cave formations, and sea creatures build their shells from the same compound. In crystal work it carries the water element, which it shares with Cancer and Pisces, and its sunny yellow and orange shades add fire, the element of Leo, ruled by the Sun, and Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. Clear calcite is tied to air and the crown.
Desks, studios and new beginnings
- On a desk for momentum through a long project
- In a studio or craft room, especially orange calcite, for creative play
- In a freshly cleaned or newly arranged room, to mark the change
- In meditation for a clear, bright mind
- Beside a planner or vision board when setting new goals
- As a gift for someone starting school, a business or a new home
The clean-slate ritual. After you clear off a desk or tidy a room, set a piece of calcite in the middle of the empty space for a minute before putting anything back. Decide what earns its place before it returns.
Calcite pieces from our shop
Place it. Our yellow calcite tower brings that honey glow to a desk or windowsill.
Past pieces have included a honey calcite sphere, a smooth calcite massage egg and orange calcite statement rings, nine of which found homes.
Wear a sunny partner. Our citrine dreamcatcher earrings carry the same golden color as yellow calcite, with the dreamcatcher for good dreams.
Add some warmth. The carnelian tree of life earrings match orange calcite's warm color, with the tree of life, an emblem of steady growth.
Citrine, carnelian and clear quartz
Citrine shares yellow calcite's solar plexus and sunny meaning, a natural match for confidence. Our citrine guide has the full story of its color. Carnelian joins orange calcite at the sacral chakra for creative drive (see the carnelian guide). Clear quartz echoes clear calcite's clarity and adds focus, as the clear quartz guide describes.
Our solar plexus chakra crystals gather more stones of confidence.
A soft stone that needs a gentle hand
Calcite is a 3 on the Mohs scale, soft enough that a steel key or knife will scratch it, and it splits easily along flat planes. Keep it away from harder crystals, and handle it like fine china. It dissolves in acid, so keep vinegar, lemon and acidic cleaners well away. Wipe it with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, towel off any moisture, and don't soak it or leave it in water. To cleanse it, rest it on a clear quartz cluster or let the smoke of a lit incense stick drift over it. Quick care facts for every stone we carry are in our crystal care chart. Every crystal in our shop is smudged with sage and charged in the moonlight before it ships.
Calcite FAQ
Is calcite quartz?
No. Calcite is a calcium carbonate and much softer than quartz.
Can calcite be scratched by a fingernail?
No, but only just. A fingernail is about 2.5 and calcite is 3, so a steel key or a knife will scratch it while a fingernail won't.
Can calcite get wet?
Briefly. A quick wipe or rinse is fine, but it can dull if left soaking, and acid etches it quickly.
Is calcite valuable?
Most calcite is affordable, since it's one of the most common minerals on earth. Large, perfectly clear optical calcite and rare colors are the collector pieces.
How can you tell calcite from quartz?
Quartz scratches glass and calcite doesn't. A drop of vinegar on an unpolished spot makes calcite fizz.
Can calcite be clear?
Yes. Clear calcite is Iceland spar, the kind that doubles every line beneath it.
Is calcite UV reactive?
Often, yes. Many calcites glow under ultraviolet light, in colors from red and pink to blue and white depending on traces of other elements.
The crystal that shows you double
Calcite is calcium carbonate, the same compound as limestone, marble, chalk and seashells, and one of the most common minerals in the earth's crust. Its crystals break cleanly into slanted, box-like shapes called rhombs, a sign of how its atoms are stacked.
Clear calcite has an even stranger habit. Set a piece of Iceland spar on a printed page and every word appears twice. The crystal splits each ray of light into two, an effect called double refraction, first described by the Danish scientist Rasmus Bartholin in 1669 using spar from the Helgustaðir mine in eastern Iceland. Those two rays are polarized differently, and that's the property the Alderney researchers used to track the hidden sun.
Each piece we sell is one of a kind, and the one pictured is the one you'll receive.
